Tellin' the truth & shamin' the devil

Don't front. You know his speech on race relations in America was dope. A topic we may have turned every which way but loose in the privacy of our own homes, social circles, barber shops and beauty salons- but avoid like the plauge in mixed company. But Obama, bless his heart, really did put the whole sordid truth on blast! He was smooth gangsta with it and I loved it! I even caught myself clapping at the monitor, throwing one hand up in the air while gently rocking to-and-fro, straight church lady style. All that was missing from my little Race Relations Revival was a collection plate and my serving notice to Barak that he "betta preach!"

Yes indeed! Barak's speech was in as neat, tidy and easily digestible a package that the vast majority of Americans have come to depend on when getting bad news. It was a tough pill to swallow - has been stuck in the collective throat of America for years. But, it just might be the beginnings of a cure for what has ailed this nation for a long while.

Race relations- certainly not the most comfortable of topics to circumnavigate in mixed company - but it's about damn time that somebody, on a national level, sincerely tried.

That Obama .... smooth like butta I tell ya.

I will also tell you that my man has got mass appeal for days on end. I have no hard data upon which to support this next claim, but my Spidey senses tell me that if it were up to the children of this nation (particularly little black boys and little black girls...big up Dr. Martin Luther "the" King) Barak would be President TODAY! When your last name is not "Bird" or you don't "transform and roll out" and your name is still ringing bells with the Toys R Us set- you know you got game!

Shug asks me everyday, as we pass a neighbors lawn sign urging others to vote for Barak, "Mommy, did he win yet?" He then proceeds to create yet another six year old free style in honor of his latest hero. Today it went a little something like this...hit it : "Go Barak, Go Barak....Oback Barammey, Oback Barammey - YEAH, he's gonna win, win, win!" Didn't you know, it is the poetic license of all 6 six year olds to create freestyles that don't actually rhyme?

Heck, this joker must be type smooth with his game, because he even got me off my comfy couch of political apathy to cast a vote for once for a candidate who was both A. actually running and B. still alive. Among my personal favorite past "written in'" choices would be Malcolm X, Shirley Chisholm and my son, Big Shuggie. Honestly, I have always felt bad about the prospect of not voting- given all that Dr. Taylor drilled into my brain during one of her many famous lectures on Afro-American History @ old H.U. But, like most other things in my life, I had to find a way to vote on my own terms. Writing a candidate in has been my way of making peace with participating in a process that I lacked complete faith in. Wasted vote, wasted shmote- sue me!

But Barak has changed all that. During this primary, I actually voted and encouraged others to do the same. Picture that! When a friend told me that he was going to be making calls for the Barak campaign he instantly became my "hero du jour!"

"KC, are you voting for Barak because he's Black?" some might ask. Allow me clear my throat before answering this one ya'll -umm, ummm,ummm.... "Hell Yeah!....And your point is?" I find Black men to be among the most intelligent, creative, resourceful, dependable and honest creatures on this planet and Barak is no exception.

Democrat or Republican- I could really give a rats-it's all the same gang. Unless, of course, you have money and lots of it. At which point, the question then becomes which party will pass legislation to help you keep more of your money in your coffers and out of the hands of those lazy poor folk (who, by the way, must have some greasy hands cause they just can't seem to keep a firm grasp on those bootstraps long enough pull themselves up.) And since my bank account reminds me daily that I am one, maybe two paychecks away from being counted among those with greasy ass hands, I don't have to concern myself with the tedium of bi-partisan politics.

Rest assured, I am not naive enough to believe that Barak will be able to create world peace, end world hunger and reverse the trend of global warming overnight, if at all. Given the state of the world wide economy and the precarious position the U.S. dollar finds itself therein at this juncture, the chips are stacked against my man. However, it was ostensibly "skilled and experienced" politicians that have brought us to our present political, economic and environmental nadir. Ergo, my logic is this- - - How much worse a job could the man do than the Arch Enemy of all would be- Evil Doers, Alderman George Bush has done? And done marvelously, I might add, all in the name of the "exactitudity of his rightetness" (his words, not mine).

It has been my experience that when shit gets thick, brother's have a way of working it out. Therefore, as far Shug and I are concerned, Obammey should continue to run! run! run!- and God willing- win! win! win!

"I's votin' now ya'll"- Stringer Bell would be so proud!

One, KC

Well I am sure I am in the minority of the black population that has not been immediately sold on Barack. For the life of me, I can honestly say I do not know why. He possesses the strong characteristics which a future president should have and offers more than any president in my memorable past (including Bubba). I will admit that I was a Hillary fan and that may be a reason why I was not immediately sold on Obama. However my thoughts are changing and I am paying close attention to the activities of all canidates. I differ from KC because I am a political junkie and find it all very intersting but nonetheless disenchanting as well. After all is said and done, I wonder who will ever help ordinary black people such as myself. Since hope is sometimes all we have, I say go forth Obama and give them hell. I also hope I am not disappointed. One final note, I wish the candidates would really speak and stake their position instead tayloring their remarks and pandering in order to fool the voters. That candor would then give us the true option of selecting a candidate that would be working for us and that would truly be change we can believe in.

Since I am new to this blogger thing, I had to choose anonymous. However I am Derek W. Brown.

As a young black woman I must say to the ghettoism that I was surround but was able though love and education exceed HOLLA:::: Barack gets my vote as a black man, a strong man, and an example for my three year old son that there is more in life than being black but being successful and strong... I must say KC hit the home run with this one...

Couple of things:

Go Derek W. Brown!!! Pragmatism never hurt anyone.

KC: I love the approach, and appreciate the honesty and the forward thinking.

I am also a Clinton supporter, but I am also re-looking at the candidates. I am very worried for the Democratic party as a whole, and I am concerned about the future, more than the immediate need (4 vs. 16 years.) No one can argue that a change is needed, but open promises could possibly end our hope for the next sixteen years.

Maybe my approach is "old" politics, but I have been hoping for a wonderful 16 year run - 8 for Hillary and 8 for Obama. My fear is what the next president will inherit. Not since Kennedy, has a President inherited a mess like this (i.e the comparison of a negative world opinion, an economy in turmoil, and an unjust/ unending war.) We are also prompted to remember the two notorious fellows who who succeeded Kennedy and Bill Clinton - Nixon and G. W. Bush. That should say enough.

Obama is a very eloquent man with a refreshing view on American life and duties, but Hillary Clinton has experience playing the political game and will know how to respond to plagues "of the past." I am not saying I will not support Obama, far from that. I am simply saying that some times putting the old dog in the fight first is a sacrifice that the cause should make.

I believe that Obama is a future that we should all invest in, but there are links in every chain. The question that we have to ask ourselves as the "change agents," is how do we set ourselves up to continue the change in the future. Sixteen years will promise the possibility of more change than four. That is my only concern, and thank you for giving me this forum to voice that concern.

Call me old fashion, but please do not view my vision as contradictory. I support your view that a change is needed. I, simply, hope for more than a quick fix. Revolutions of thought and ideology need to stand the test of time, which is something our young nation fails to uphold. If this is false, then why are so many children of the "Peace" generation are now Republicans.

No matter what, we are taking a risk! Anybody's candidate could lead to broken promises. Both candidates have their flaws. To all - just think it out. Lets just end the confrontation. Inner fighting just flashes the kink in our armor.

Clinton
Thank you, thank you, thank you all for your comments. This is why I surround myself with other "forward thinking...ala Clinton" folks! Derek, I am glad that I was able to usher you along as we embark on this here cyber adventure- and a google account to boot! Quel Suprise!

Nakia- you know- your comments regarding Barak being patient and attentive are so true. I don't know enough about politics to intelligently discuss "his record" what I do know is what I see going on around me everyday and the all I see is things getting worse. Like I said, where has all the experience gotten us thus far. I need someone with characteristics I can relate to- honesty, sincerity, integrity and a sista for a wife that don't take no shit!

But, with that said, I can certainly appreciate the illumination from Clinton on the importance of having a long range strategy for the party. My problem is that I never have considered myself a part of the process (not to mention a party) to begin with. However, his comments forced me to realize just how much I too am invested in this here game- if for no other reason than because whatever happens- it will directly impact the future of my child.

At the end of the day, what I want is what I think we all want. A captain to step in and take the steps necessary to shape this ship up!
BTW-Clinton & Derek, I am gonna have to start watching more fox five, BBC, CNN or something to keep up with you guys on our AC trip!
